CREATIVITY : THINK OUT OF THE BOX
MAKING THE SIMPLE AWESOMELY SIMPLE, THATS CREATIVITY” words by Charles Mingus.
Creativity is not about your skills, its about your level of thinking. It is a phenomenon whereby something new and somehow valuable is formed. The created item may be intangible such as an idea, a scientific theory, a musical composition, or a joke or a physical object such as an invention, a literary work, or a painting.
Theories of creativity particularly investigation of why some people are more creative than others have focused on a variety of aspects. The dominant factors are usually identified as "the four Ps" — process, product, person, and place. A focus on process is shown in cognitive approaches that try to describe thought mechanisms and techniques for creative thinking. A focus on creative product usually appears in attempts to measure creativity and in creative ideas framed as successful memes.
The neuroscience of creativity looks at the operation of the brain during creative behaviour. Highly creative people who excel at creative innovation tend to differ from others in three ways: they have a high level of specialized knowledge, they are capable of divergent thinking mediated by the frontal lobe and they are able to modulate neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine in their frontal lobe.
Thus, the frontal lobe appears to be the part of the cortex that is most important for creativity.
Neurologists have also explored the links between creativity and sleep, mood and addiction disorders, and depression.
Researchers of creativity see the difference in creative people as a cognitive process of dedication to problem solving and developing expertise in the field of their creative expression. Hard working people study the work of people before them and within their current area, become experts in their fields, and then have the ability to add to and build upon previous information in innovative and creative ways. In a study of projects by design students, students who had more knowledge on their subject on average had greater creativity within their projects.
Nickerson provides a summary of the various creativity techniques that have been proposed. These include approaches that have been developed by both academia and industry:
- Building basic skills
- Stimulating and rewarding curiosity and exploration
- Building motivation, especially internal motivation
- Encouraging confidence and a willingness to take risks
- Promoting supportable beliefs about creativity
- Providing opportunities for choice and discovery
- Developing self-management
- Teaching techniques and strategies for facilitating creative performance
What it takes to be a creative teacher is what it takes to be a creative artist. Creativity comes via inspiration, inspiration comes from thoughts and thoughts just appear by mixing things. Therefore a new way of thinking should always be encouraged and creativity should always be welcomed.
